Norman Powell’s an interesting gamble by Miami, especially considering the likelihood of them granting him the big, long-term extension he’s been seeking.
Powell was dynamite to start the season last year, arguably their best player.
But he tailed off dramatically after his injury, and when Kawhi returned:
Powell has real top-end scoring ability and he should help to both take some of the pressure on Tyler Herro and help Herro be better at the same time.
The extension they’re going to give him is undoubtedly going to be too much for a 32-year-old never-star.
Having Powell = good!
Giving Powell a lot of money over more than two years = bad
If the rumors are wrong and they get him on a short-term or smaller-money deal, then it’s a home run
I really think Davion Mitchell might be more of what he was in that small stretch of nonsense games in Miami than before. Taking a gamble on him was really smart.
Miami’s biggest addition this year is a fresh start from all the bullshit they had to deal with last year with Jimmy.
LOSSES
Love probably could have gotten out of Miami sooner if he wanted a significant role; the writing was on the wall there for a little bit. It’s a shame since he was so good there. I hope he’s got one more chapter in his career.
Slo-Mo just keeps on bouncing around. Definitely one of those “remember that guy?” guys.
They’ll miss Robinson quite a bit. There’s institutional knowledge. There’s how he expanded his game. And there’s the shooting. They probably have enough to make up for it, but they’ll have games where Robinson would have helped them win, even if Powell has a good game.
